VICTORY! The city of Dorval removes the points relative to the breed specific legislation!

 

Montreal, September 17th, 2019 – The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) Canada is pleased with the withdrawal of a by-law project related to race-specific legislation in the plan to update the regulation for the control of animals in the Montreal borough of Dorval, wanting to set up a framework for dogs called “potentially dangerous”.

This morning we learned in the media the city was planning to include breed specific legislation specifically targeting Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Bulldog, Mastiff, Husky, Labrador retriever, Boxer, Doberman, Chow Chow or dogs derived from crossbreeding with one or more of these breeds. However, it was after receiving numerous comments from citizens that the City of Dorval City Council decided to review the current by-law draft in order to remove the points concerning the legislation relating to particular breeds.

After reviewing the updated project, SPA Canada immediately responded within minutes by posting a message for citizen mobilization on its social networks and writing a press release on the subject. Only 4 hours later, the city of Dorval had already changed its position, announcing the withdrawal of points regarding the specific legislation on race on its official website. “The strength of the opinion of citizens is very important, it must never be underestimated,” says Dominique Routhier, Acting Director General and Animal Biologist of SPA Canada.

This is a great victory for SPA Canada as well as for all citizens who made their voices heard! Not only have the effects of our actions been felt at lightning speed, but this situation is a good example of the mobilizing force of SPA Canada as well as the community, with animal protection at heart.

“It is very encouraging to see a city that listens to its citizens and is open to changes.” adds Mel-Lyna Cadieux, graduate in Applied Ethology, Project Manager at the SPA Canada Animal Ethics Department. “Not only does this decision demonstrate openness on the part of the city, but it will also contribute to the implementation of viable solutions that will contribute to the creation of a real public safety by-law and a well-functioning society informed about dog behavior.” she concluded.
