Slump in milk prices: A step towards better nutrition
Montréal, May 24, 2018 – The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) Canada reacts to the Producteurs de lait du Québec’s outcry against the drop in milk prices.
In the last few years, studies have shown how animal milk is harmful to our health. Hardly anyone has shown any interest in these problems so far. However, today, people’s diets are no longer the same, and there is a greater focus on healthy and environmentally conscious products. This in turn has led to a decline in dairy products demand, on behalf of plant-based milk (Soy Milk, Hemp Milk…) and thus has led to a shortfall for Canadian producers.
“This falling price of milk represents an improvement in consumers’ diet and a curb on the exploitation of dairy cows” says Elise Moreau, SPA Canada communications officer. It must be remembered that, just like for women, cow’s milk production is triggered by birth. To ensure a steady daily production, cows are artificially inseminated every 12 months once they turn 2. Calves are separated from their mother within the first 48 hours or even immediately after delivery. Separation of a mother and her baby will undeniably result in great sorrow and obviously will have terrible psychological repercussions for the two living beings. The typical dairy cow lives an average of five years. This mass production of milk is responsible for injuries and infectious diseases.
Besides forced exploitation of cows and their calves, animal milk consumption is bad for your health. Dr Michael Greger, specialist in nutrition, has shown, using reports from Harvard researchers that animal milk consumption increases, among others, risks of fracture, cancer and premature death. Drinking 3 glasses of milk per day thus increases by 2 the risk of premature death.
We must stop forcing people to consume products that are harmful to their health. There are many different options to replace cow’s milk, the main one being plant-based milks, which are completely safe.
As the real issue seems to be financial, we advise dairy farmers to change their practices towards fair food, increasingly popular and completely cruelty-free.
