Press Release: Legislative News from the City of Montreal.

Congratulations to Ville-Mont-Royal for taking concrete action against puppy mills. The sale of pets is forbidden in all Ville-Mont-Royal pet stores from now on, unless they are sterilized or come from a shelter. This is a step in the right direction and S.P.A. Canada is impatient to see the other boroughs follow this example.

Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve which will allow as of July the breeding of hens in its urban gardens. Knowing that these hens will be given to a breeder or a shelter when fall comes, and that this neighbourhood deals with the for-profit pound Berger blanc, SPA Canada is worried about the arrival of hens in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. We believe that the neighbourhood should start by taking measures to ethically manage its population of cats and dogs, notably by cancelling its contract with Berger blanc, by offering low cost sterilization for pet owners, a Trap-Neuter and Release program for its stray cats, and by following Ville-Mont-Royal’s example by forbidding the sale of pets in pet stores unless they come from a shelter.
