Horse-Drawn Carriages: Montreal Plans to Invest in Animal Cruelty
Montreal, December 15th 2016 — SPA Canada is outraged to learn that Mayor Coderre is planning on wasting 500 000 of taxpayer dollars on the horse-drawn carriage industry while major cities like London, Paris and Toronto have made the ethical decision to stop encouraging animal exploitation by banning the industry altogether. SPA Canada is unfortunately not surprised to learn that following the adoption of a breed specific legislation, in opposition to the international tendency to reverse such laws, that the Mayor continues to make decisions that go against the ethical treatment of animals.
“While we celebrate the one year anniversary of Quebec’s adoption of Bill 54, officially recognizing animals as sentient beings, the Mayor of Montreal is proposing to spend thousands of dollars to continue exploiting horses and going against their biological imperatives. This goes against the very essence of the Bill” states Katherine Mac Donald, spokesperson for SPA Canada.
