Montreal, July 24th, 2014 – As videos of animal cruelty in the agriculture business go viral in the media, from gestation crates for pigs to beaten veal cows, Canadians everywhere are becoming more aware of the many horrors the meat and animal by-product industry represent. “Many people don’t believe it until they see it with their own eyes. Now that it has been mediatized, SPA Canada aims to invite the population to take action and try alternatives,” explains SPA Canada director of campaigns Gabriel Villeneuve. With this in mind, SPA Canada is launching the first ever World Tofu Day, in Montreal, Quebec. The event will consist of a free vegan barbecue, meaning all items on the menu will be free of all animal products and by-products.

Georges Laraque, NHL veteran and renowned vegan, as well as Anne-Marie Roy, famous in her own right as a vegan nutritionist and dietitian, will be at the event to bring attention to the plight of farm animals . The idea behind this event is to offer an opportunity for everyone to try vegan alternatives in the height of barbecue season. Many such options are available in mainstream grocery stores but are often overlooked for lack of familiarity or knowledge of the products. In addition, many restaurants offer delicious vegan meals that would get any omnivore’s mouth watering. Plant-based options are delicious and offer a healthy and more ethical alternative to animal-derived equivalents. “It has been shown that plant-based diets are not only free of animal cruelty but also often healthier as well as being less of a strain on our environment. There are many reasons that exist to make the move towards a vegan diet, what reasons exist not to?” asks Mr. Villeneuve.

With barbecues blazing all summer long, World Tofu Day is meant to represent a much-needed pause to reflect on the typical summer menu of hamburgers, sausages, ribs, etc., and what this represents for the animals of the meat industry, the environment and our health.
