Canada’s new Food Guide or openness to veganism
Montreal, January 22, 2019 – Following the publishing of the new Canada Food Guide, the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA Canada) wishes to congratulate the government for relying on scientific evidence rather than listening to meat and dairy producers that clearly have a financial interest in how the guide steers consumers.
Since it first appeared in 1942, the Canada Food Guide has been influenced by dairy, meat and egg producers. Today, despite ongoing pressure from these industries, the Guide has turned to nutrition and health experts to give Canadians healthy eating advice. In fact, meat and alternatives, as well as dairy products categories, are no longer included in the Guide. The government has listened to the public, and experts, and has taken scientifically proven facts on board.
Fewer and fewer people are consuming animal products and by-products. Studies into healthy eating also show that meat, eggs and dairy products should be consumed in moderation, or not at all. “Most people are now aware that millions of vegans enjoy far better health than omnivores,” said Dominique Routhier, director of animal advocacy and animal biologist at SPA Canada.
The new Canada Food Guide is a step in the right direction for better advice on diet, as it makes fewer suggestions for eating meat and dairy products, but it still isn’t perfect. “Nowadays we have enough experience to know that the consumption of animals or by-products of animals is more to do with taste and far less with any kind of health reason, which is why we advocate vegan food. Industries that use animals for clothing, entertainment and food still exist not because we need them for our survival, but for pure pleasure, which results in the abuse and death of millions of animals daily.
SPA Canada is asking the government to provide accessible resources to all Canadians who wish to become vegans, such as informative websites with vegan recipes. This also means better access to vegan food in public places, schools and government buildings.
