SPA Canada in an article by Journal de Montréal: Centre animalier, la SPA applaudit la nouvelle. (Animal center, the SPA applauds the news.)
The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) Canada qualifies as a ‘’great victory’’ the decision by the City of Montreal to create a new animal centre destined to replace Berger Blanc.
‘’The SPA is pleased that the city has finally listened to the population’s preoccupations concerning the defective animal management system in Quebec.’’ they wrote in a press release.
The Society deplores however the decision to keep Berger Blanc in operation and to honour all existing contracts. It also deplores the decision to give the management of the new centre to a non-profit organisation.
‘’The city is the only one with legal responsibility concerning animal management on its territory, and thus must take over the task of managing it just as it does its Fire Prevention Department’’ Gabriel Villeneuve from the SPA states.
The SPA also wants that the City of Montreal offer access to a low-cost sterilisation clinic and, especially, that it decides to ban the sale of animals in pet shops in order to make adoption in shelters the only option possible for those who want to get an animal.
